Ocean County is located in central New Jersey and is the second largest county in terms of size. It is also one of four counties that border the Atlantic Ocean. The county is located conveniently between New York City and Philadelphia. Also, Atlantic City is only about 50 miles south.
Most of the development is Ocean County has occurred along the coast and along both the Garden State Parkway and Route 9. There is also a lot of protected open space in the county, including State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas. East of the Parkway, there is an area of land measuring 20,000 acres, which is protected under the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. A portion of land in the northwest area of the county is active farmland being preserved under the County Farmland Preservation Program.
